OpenAI: Three days, three CEOs: OpenAI gets former Twitch boss to replace Sam Altman

To call the last three days at OpenAI chaotic would be an understatement. Even if you asked ChatGPT to write a script on bizarre events unfolding at a company, the AI chatbot wouldn’t have been able to come up with what happened at OpenAI. In three days, the company has seen three CEOs.
It all started with OpenAI board firing Sam Altman (CEO #1). In a statement issued by OpenAI board of directors, the implication was that Altman was a non-starter anymore as “the board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.” Altman in a post on X described the experience as “weird” and felt that it “has been sorta like reading your own eulogy while you’re still alive.”
Altman was ousted and was replaced by Mira Murati(CEO #2).Murati was the chief technology officer at OpenAI and was named interim CEO. Social media was abuzz with Altman’s dismissal and reports suggested that the company’s employees threatened to walk away if Altman wasn’t reinstated. It was reported that even Murati wanted to get Altman back. Altman did come back to discuss the possibility of coming back barely a day after he was sacked. However, according to a report by The Information, talks have failed and OpenAI now has a new CEO.Emmett Shear (CEO #3), former CEO of Twitch, has now been named interim CEO of OpenAI.
According to a report by The New York Times, the board at OpenAI sent a memo to employees and informed that Shear was the new CEO. As per the report, in the memo the board said “Shear has a “unique mix of skills, expertise and relationships that will drive OpenAI forward.”
In the memo, the board once again reiterated that the decision to remove Altman was the correct one. “Put simply, Sam’s behaviour and lack of transparency in his interactions with the board undermined the board’s ability to effectively supervise the company in the manner it was mandated to do.”
